JAKARTA - The Capital City 

Officially known as the Special Capital Region of Jakarta, the largest city of Indonesia   It is the country's economic, cultural and political center with a population of over 10 million people.



All visitors travelling to Indonesia must be in possession of a passport  valid for at least six months from date of arrival in Indonesia and have proof of onward passage. Visas are not required for nationals of ASEAN countries. Visa can be obtained upon arrival or even on board of Garuda Indonesia inbound flights for some nationalities. International health certificates for smallpox and cholera are not required, except for travelers arriving from infected area


Airport tax levied on passengers for international travel is Rp 100,000. For travel within Indonesia regional variation occur. Expect to pay an average of about Rp 50.000

The currency of Indonesia is the Rupiah [Rp or IDR], which comes from the Sanskrit word for wrought silver, rupya. Indonesian bank notes come in denominations of Rp 1000, 2000, 5000, 10000, 20000, 50000 and 100000 bill.

Jakarta and some other major destinations have several international banks.Money can also be changed at hotel cashiers [the exchange rate is bad] or authorized money changers. Daily exchange rates are published in news paper or banks website. Recommended bank :BCA [Bank Central Asia]. The US Dollars is the most readily accepted currency. Credit cards are acceptable at almost every hotels, restaurants and travel agencies.


Power supply is usually 220 Volts / 250 cycles in large cities, but 110 volts / 50 cycles is still used in some areas. Normal outlet are plugs with two round pins. It is advisable to check electricity supplies before using any appliance


Dress is normally informal in Indonesia due to the warm and humid climate. Clothing of light fabrics are recommended. Traveling in highland areas is noticeably cooler and carrying a lighter sweater may prove useful. Accepted attire for men is a shirt and long pants. A jacket and tie are required for official calls or for more formal occasions. Long sleeved batik or hand woven shirts are acceptable for evening functions. For ladies, dresses, blouses and log pants are appropriate. However, shorts, halters or tank tops are commonly accepted.


Business offices are usually open either from 08.00 AM to 16.00 PM or 09.00 AM tp 17.00 PM, with a break for lunch and praying between 12.00 noon and 13.00 PM [11.30 AM to 13.00 PM on Fridays]. Business offices are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Government office hours are from  08.00 AM to 16.00 PM from Monday to Friday.
